Jonathan Hickman's Manhattan Projects, Vol. 5: Cold War features the line, "a polarized earth is the necessary means to our duplicitous end." The Soviet Union's Star City couldn't collaborate with America's Manhattan Projects forever, could it? Vol. 5 deviates from simply taking historical characters and creating a neat story about them, going as far as rewriting historical events so that they're manufactured and controlled by the two formerly friendly agencies.
What surprised me is how good this volume is without the characters that made the first four volumes great. There is an emphasis on politics, and the seeming departure of my favorite character in Vol. 4 hasn't slowed down this series a bit, plus the characters in the background of this book can always come back to the foreground in future volumes.
